The easiest way for both parent and baby to get out into the world is via a stroller. Strollers offer a convenient and safe means of transportation and can be an important part of parent-child bonding. They are also the means by which the child is introduced to and invited to interact with the outside world. Some research findings include:
At birth, a child can only see 8-15 inches. Since they gain comfort and security from eye contact with their parent, it is important that they are not too far away from the parent.8 Even in a stroller.
First time parents are new to the situation of taking a child out in a stroller. The added comfort of being closer to their child and able to readily observe their child gives a parent peace of mind.
A stroller that allows for a complete stride, and an upright position by the parent is the most beneficial for walking and helps minimize injury.9 The ability to readily adjust the height reduces the need for bending over to check on the child or to make eye contact.
A bassinet feature places a baby in a warm, secure environment in which they can interact with their parent and sleep as desired, flat on their back. (It should not however, replace sleeping in a bed as it is not designed for proper airflow over an extended period of time.)
At six months of age, a child should be able to hold their head up and is capable of seeing nearly across a room.10 A stroller that places the child higher up, therefore, would give a child more to see and share with their parent.
A higher stroller provides more opportunities for parent-child bonding as both are physically closer and able to make eye contact. The ride is therefore more enjoyable.
As with chairs, a stroller must support the child, offer a firm and adjustable place for them to put their feet, allow movement to adjust comfort and keep them safely strapped in.
